Imprisoned for writing an email

In Chapter 7 of "In the Shadow of the Buddha", I discuss the tragic imprisonment of Shin Tao, who was imprisoned in 2004 for writing a single email. I discuss Shin Tao's case in the book, and write, "Even a single email containing what the Chinese government deems "state secrets" will bring with it years of imprisonment and torture...The Communist Party of China broadly defines "state secrets" as anything that harms state interests, such as development plans, environmental quality reports, data on public health risks, and stats on those harmed by natural disasters. Writing poems about Tibetan history, photographs of some Buddhist teachers living in India, or a mobile phone ring tone if it has the Dalai Lama chanting are also of criminal nature."
